There have been multiple anecdotal reports of normal pregnancies in women following uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). However, the long-term effects of UFE on a women's ability to conceive and/or carry a normal pregnancy to term are not known. Therefore, uterine fibroid embolization is not currently recommended as a first line therapy in women who may still desire fertility unless:
The patient has failed myomectomy or other treatment options and the only other option is hysterectomy.
and/or
Due to the size, number, and/or location of the fibroids, there is a high risk of a myomectomy resulting in a hysterectomy or causing significant scarring, thus eliminating or signicantly decreasing the patient's fertility.
There was a recent study comparing the fertility of women following uterine fibroid embolization with those who had myomectomy that showed some of the number of successful pregnancies in both groups. Further studies are needed and are currently underway.
